Voltage Explainer Video Goes Viral After Electrician Uses Profoundly Incorrect Water Analogy

A TikTok video in which a self-described 'electrical content creator' attempts to explain voltage using a garden hose has gone viral for reasons its creator did not intend, after professional electricians identified no fewer than eleven fundamental errors in the 90-second clip.

The video, posted by user @SparkyBrainz, begins promisingly enough with the common hydraulic analogy comparing electrical current to water flow. It then rapidly deteriorates.

'Voltage is the water,' @SparkyBrainz explains while holding a garden hose. 'Amps is the pressure. Resistance is like the kink in the hose. And watts are basically wet amps.'

The clip has been viewed 4.2 million times, with the comments section serving as an impromptu electrical engineering lecture hall.

'I had to lie down,' wrote one commenter identified as a 30-year master electrician. 'Voltage is pressure, current is flow rate. He has literally reversed the two foundational concepts and then invented a third thing that doesn't exist.'

Another commenter noted that the video's demonstration — in which @SparkyBrainz pours water from a funnel to illustrate 'how amps get bigger when the wire gets smaller' — actually demonstrates the opposite of what he claims.

@SparkyBrainz has responded to the criticism by posting a follow-up video titled 'Part 2: AC vs DC (One Is Spicier),' which has already been reported to the platform's misinformation team by the National Electrical Contractors Association.
