AD Waitlist Correspondent Reorganizes Entire Household Budget Following 3:00 AM Telephone Call

The copy editor of this column first noticed a single line on the March household budget, between the boiler service reserve and the school shoes: "deposit, non-refundable," in a hand that did not usually touch the ledger. That hand had written everything below it and quietly ruled a second column to the right.

The call came at 3:00 a.m. from Silas Tilling's shop line, which Silas uses only when something has happened that he considers social rather than commercial. A box had come in. The name under discussion belonged to the correspondent, who had been on a list since a period of his life he now describes as "before the boiler." Silas did not use the word "offer." He used the word "window," and then "Friday."

Ninety seconds later he was awake in the way people are awake when a decision has already been made on their behalf. The car's timing belt, booked for April, was moved to a column headed "deferred." A holiday was moved to a column headed "reviewable." The annual servicing reserve, a line item he had defended in writing, twice, against a partner who argued it was speculative, was struck through and rewritten smaller, because servicing, it turned out, was a problem for the owner of a watch, and he was about to become one.

He then assembled a one-page document for the household's other signatory listing calibre, power reserve, and the finishing of the movement bridges, with the power reserve at the top, where a savings rate would go. He had the decency not to call it a prospectus. He did call it "the full picture."

Oksana's Counterclaim tests the claim that a waitlist is a relationship and not a transaction. Against it: the correspondent's own call log, one entry, ninety seconds, ending with a request to confirm intent by Friday.

At the group's next meeting, in the back of Silas's shop, the agenda was reorganized around his allocation. Basil Keene asked whether the deposit had been transferable. Inez Bellamy, who left the collecting group in protest several years ago and has attended every meeting since, asked whether the boiler was still booked for April. The question was treated as off-topic.

He answered it later, by email: the boiler would be serviced in June, and the watch would be collected on Friday at eleven, which he had confirmed twice in writing with a precision he had not applied to the birthday dinner he postponed twice to stay reachable by telephone.

On Friday he will transfer a balance he has never said out loud to a room of people who all know the number. He will be told the watch is running at minus two seconds a day and will ask, without meaning to, whether that is before or after he wears it.
