Truffle Dog Quits After Owner Sells Find for $800 and Buys Regular Kibble

Bruno, a four-year-old Lagotto Romagnolo trained in truffle detection, has not located a single truffle in six weeks, a work stoppage his handler attributes to 'a legitimate labor dispute.'

The standoff began in December when Bruno's owner, truffle hunter Gaston Terroir, sold a 340-gram black truffle that Bruno located in the Willamette Valley for $800 at a specialty food market. Terroir then stopped at a grocery store on the way home and purchased a bag of store-brand kibble.

'I think he saw the receipt,' Terroir admitted. 'He sniffed the bag, looked at me, looked at the bag again, and walked away. He hasn't indicated on a truffle since.'

Animal behaviorists say Bruno's response is consistent with what is known in the field as 'inequity aversion' -- a documented phenomenon in which animals refuse to cooperate when they perceive the distribution of rewards as unfair.

'The dog found something worth $800 and received food worth $3.99,' said animal behavior researcher Dr. Frieda Pavlov. 'He can't do the exact math, but he can clearly sense the disparity. This is a strike, and it's a rational one.'

Terroir has attempted to resolve the dispute with escalating incentives, progressing from premium kibble ($12.99) to fresh chicken ($8 per pound) to a hand-cut ribeye ($34). Bruno consumed each offering but continued to refuse to work.

'He ate the steak and then walked past a truffle that was literally sticking out of the ground,' Terroir said. 'He looked at it. He looked at me. He kept walking. This dog is making a point.'

A professional truffle dog trainer consulted on the case has advised Terroir to 'restructure the compensation model' and suggested a system in which Bruno receives a portion of each truffle for personal consumption.

Terroir has agreed to the terms. Bruno has not yet signed off.
